Latest ACE Project - June 2009 - See The Chair Not Me

Volunteers on the 6th ACE group took their disability awareness campaign, ‘See Me Not The Chair’ to London and met with SCOPE’s head of local campaigns and Marketing manager. The group presented their series of posters and a short film called the Artist.

The group wanted to challenge people’s attitudes to people with disability and encourage them to see the person not the disability. SCOPE were very impressed with what the group and have included it on their news page as well as putting the film on their channel. As a thank you for all their hard work the group then went to watch Grease at the Piccadilly Theatre and checked out Downing Street and the House of Commons.

You can watch the film below, on You Tube, through the SCOPE website or follow the blog on www.seemenotthechair.blogspot.com.

More about ACE

The exciting side of this project is that each group chooses what issues they want to tackle and how! It could be making a DVD to warn of the dangers of drugs, or a concert to promote good mental health or cleaning up an area and creating a garden, we just don’t know yet. The groups will be making their own decisions and even managing a budget and will be facilitated by the Youth Volunteer Support Worker.

We are hoping that volunteers will learn both transferable and real world skills and hope to engage with a variety of the different resources including commercial that are available in Hull.

The project will run 6, 12 week groups a year, attending 2 half days a week. Volunteers also have the opportunity to gain an AQA accreditation in Volunteering and the v50 award.
